DCPT is located at Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark and is the only proton clinic in the country.
Proton therapy is an advanced type of radiation therapy, where the radiation is directed to the tumour with high precision.
The full treatment course takes place at the DCPT, including consultations, pre-treatment scannings and treatments.
At the first consultation, you will be seen by a radiation oncologist and a nurse. The same team will follow you throughout the treatment course of five to six weeks.
The treatments are delivered on weekdays, and each session lasts for approximately 30 minutes.
It is important that you lie still in the same position throughout each treatment session. The radiation therapists will assure that you are as comfortable as possible.
For treatments targeted the brain or head and neck, it might be necessary to remove facial hair before the first contact in the clinic, where the immobilisation mask is to be prepared.
Side effects from the treatment depends on diagnosis and area of radiation. Skin reactions, fatigue and pain are general side effects to proton therapy. You will receive more information from the treating physician about the risks and management of any specific side effects.

DCPT staff will help to arrange accommodation in a guest house or hotel in a short distance from the DCPT. These facilities are well-equipped and with options for physical exercise, WiFi access as well as grocery shopping options within a reasonable distance.
There are special options provided for families with children receiving treatment of which you will be informed.
Accommodation is located with natural areas, forests and the coast in close proximity, providing possibilities for walks and runs in the area. The Danish weather conditions is changing with the seasons, so be aware to bring proper attire for the season and conditions.
Before arrival, we advise that you consider activities in between treatments. You will have plenty of leisure time for hobbies, reading, relaxation, exercise, exploring nature and the city of Aarhus.
Aarhus is Denmark's second largest city with a city population of almost 350.000. You can expect the majority of the population to speak basic English.
There are museums, parks, beaches, architectural sights, attractions and shopping options in close proximity of DCPT and within walking distance from the city centre.

The Danish Centre for Particle Therapy is located in the northern part of Aarhus, approximately 5,5 kilometres from the main train station in the city centre.
